rats

Those dirty rats, dey stole it!

While we wait patiently for the 2011 Harry Angel Sprint scores to be published, let's recap on what this competition is all about.

It may look like brotherly love but those two Presidents are actually locked in a tussle over that poor little trophy!

10BBQ3

2010 @ Buxton and sadly the trophy had to be passed to Hervey Bay!

Oh the shame.... although something gave away the fact that they could have been BURGLARS!

10BBQ2

Yes, is was a sad day in 2010 when we had to give up our rights to the trophy,
but Hervey Bay, ever the generous, caring folk that they are...
insisted that we take a little something home... just to make us feel better.

(aren't they just the sweetest?)

10BBQ6

They say a picture is worth a thousand words!

rusty

There was some concern that President Rusty may break down and cry
but he remained strong and accepted our place - SECOND in 2010

INTERCLUB TROPHY

Each year in April the clubs do battle while competing in the Harry Angel Sprint. It's a 106 minute contest honouring the late Harry Angel who lived to 106 years young and was a great Amateur Radio enthusiast.

The object of the Interclub challenge is to encourage Club Member participation so it’s NOT a contest for the highest individual score. Rather it involves working out the ratio of how many members with Callsigns could participate against how many actually did participate.

We then arrive at a ratio or factor for each club and multiply it by the official point scores from the WIA AR Magazine.

More members participate = Higher Club FACTOR = Better New Score

Highest NEW score wins Trophy

It works like this:

  1. Take the total number of Club Members (and discard this number!) smiley

  2. Take the total number of Club Members with CALLSIGNS – this is the important number

  3. Take the number of club CALLSIGNS who participated in H.A.S. (as published in the AR Mag.)

  4. Divide the total participants by the total number possible and this gives each club a “Factor”

  5. Take the combined points score from the A.R Magazine and multiply by the club’s Factor

  6. This gives each club a new “Score” – the highest score WINS the Pat Dryden Trophy – to be awarded at the annual HBARC/BARC BBQ held at Buxton in mid July.

History:
The contest was designed & the rules decided by VK4ACB & VK4JM in 2007 (both were the Secretary of their respective Clubs at the time).

The Trophy was originally the H.B.A.R.C. Pat Dryden [VK4PAT] Trophy for Outstanding Service to the Club and it was decided to honour the past HBARC President by utilizing this trophy and retaining the name.

Past Winners of the Interclub Challenge:

So you see no matter which way you try the examples, increasing the club turnout really boosts the scoring. So even a small club with enthusiastic members will beat a lone high scoring member or a bigger club with more lethargic members.

Thus we achieve our aim of creating a competition which will reward the club who can enthuse it's members and get them participating in the Sprint.

To recap, The Secretary’s Duties:

  • Count your total Membership – do more recruiting you need more members smiley
  • Count your members with Callsigns
  • Tell the Secretary of the other club those CALLSIGNS
  • Encourage participation by YOUR club in the Harry Angel Sprint
  • Participate in the H.A.S. – 106 minutes only
  • Encourage your Members to SEND  THEIR LOGS to the Contest Manager  so their score will count (remember only scores  published in the  WIA A.R. Magazine are counted in the scoring process)
  • From the published  A.R. results compare your club Callsigns and confirm number of your members who participated – inform the other Secretary
  • Work out your CLUB FACTOR and communicate that Factor to the other Secretary:  Take the total number of Club Members who participated & divide by the total callsigns possible.  e.g. 10 participants from 20 callsigns 10/20 = 0.5 – that’s your FACTOR
  • Multiply your Factor by the total point scores your members attained (from the A.R. results) e.g. If your 10 participants scored a combined 150 points:  multiply that combined score by Your Factor  e.g. 150 x 0.5 = 75 is new club score.
  • Compare the scores with the other Secretary
  • Gloat and claim the trophy – SIMPLE AS THAT smiley
  • Arrange the annual HBARC/BARC BBQ and ensure the trophy is on hand to be awarded to YOUR  club.
  • Have the new “Year shield” engraved and attached to the Trophy

All Clubs are urged to steal this format to foster member participation & encourage friendly competition
